TIL: books, manifestation & anxiety
Spending a few dollars
and a couple of hours
to purchase and read books filled with wisdom has always been a choice that yields the highest dividends.
Getting the lessons that others spent years acquiring in just a couple of hours is an option available to all of us, but few of us choose to leverage it.
Disappointment hit me hard when I noticed I wasn’t getting the same benefits from my time as before.
I used to read one or two books every month, but I’ve lost that habit.
And trying to bring it back hasn’t worked.
I was tough on myself until I reminded myself that life has its ups and downs. Things we want can come and go in different phases of our lives.
Learning phase. Planning phase. Execution phase.
The circle repeats itself.
I got over the learning and planning phase.
I now execute.
On the one hand, I want to go back and start reading and learning about business and mindset but I know that progress will only come by execution and consistency.
If you have given up on one of your beautiful habits, regardless of what that may be, don’t be hard on yourself.
Phases come and go.
Just be aware.
Just be strategic.
THINGS I’VE LEARNED
1.
Manifestation is real
The pattern is now clear.
What do the author of “Think and Grow Rich,”
a Roman Emperor,
the pioneer of motivational recordings in personal development,
a renowned transcendentalist philosopher,
and the individual who laid the foundation for modern psychology
have in common?
I’ll share with you the quotes they said, and you can judge for yourself.
Napoleon Hill: “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
Marcus Aurelius: “A man’s life is what thoughts make of it.”
Earl Nightingale: “Here’s the key to success and the key to failure. We become what we think about.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson: “A man is what he thinks about all day long.”
William James: “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering the attitudes of their mind.”
2.
Action is the antidote to anxiety
You’re not afraid of the future when you’re moving yourself toward it.
If you feel anxiety creeping in,
use it as a trigger to lean into action, not stagnation.
Do something and you’ll feel better.
When I’m super anxious, I try to take the simplest, smallest step towards the direction I want to go.
It’s always better than spending my next 30 minutes scrolling mindlessly on Elcune’s Instagram.
3.
Beware of the story you tell yourself.
“If an idiot were to tell you the same story every day for a year, you would end by believing it.” — Horace Mann, h/t Shane Parrish.
The story we tell ourselves is the most powerful one in the world. Eventually, we start believing it, even when it’s not true. Once we believe it, more often than not turns to reality.
GROW YOUR INFLUENCE
“Not to piss off anyone who is reading this,
but if you haven’t gotten what you want, then you’re not worthy of it. Period.
And that’s okay.
Now you can admit that you suck and improve.
Better to know you’re bad for a season than pretend you are good for a lifetime.
You’re not making as much money as you want, because you’re not as good as you think you are.
You are not struggling with impostor syndrome.
You are a student and pretend you are a teacher.
No students say they feel like a fraud trying to learn.
You are a fraud when you get up to teach the class and you never done it.”
